Hometown Source: Burnsville Democrat Dan Powers plans to challenge Rep. Kline

The 2nd Congressional District race took more shape today (Tuesday, Nov. 17) with Burnsville Democrat Dan Powers’ announcement.

Powers intends to challenge fourth-term Republican Congressman John Kline, R-Lakeville, to represent the district.

Burnsville resident Dan Powers today (Tuesday, Nov. 17) announced his candidacy for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District. The Democrat said he is running to win, not just to make a statement. Speaking at a Capitol press conference, Powers, who holds a commercial pilot’s license and has long ties to the roofing industry, said he had considering running last election.

But a late entry, concerns about campaign funding, had him back off.

“I wanted to make sure we could have a strong candidate and that’s why I supported Steve Sarvi at the time,” said Powers.

“We can do better”

In his announcement speech — one laced with the phrase “We can do better” — Powers spoke of the need for affordable health care, putting people back to work, the state becoming a leader in pollution-free energy.

“I am running to win,” he said.

Powers spoke of falling off a ladder, breaking his back, having to face hardship and medical costs and learning the challenges faced by district residents. “I am one of them,” said Powers.

Two Dakota County DFLers, state representatives Mike Obermueller, of Eagan, and Phillip Sterner, of Rosemount, attended the announcement.

“He’s (Powers) not going to get outworked, I can tell you that,” said Obermueller of Powers’ tenacity as a candidate.

Powers would be good voice for district residents — Kline is a remote lawmaker, Obermueller opined.
